Morning Star School was founded in 1956 due to the community’s concern for students with special learning disabilities. Over the years, the special needs encompassed by its programs have evolved with the needs of its students and the greater need of the community.

Morning Star School is dedicated to helping children with impaired learning abilities become useful, functioning members of society. Morning Star serves children with specific learning disabilities, i.e. attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), and dyslexia. The ultimate goal of instructors and administration alike is to equip students with the tools needed to return to a “normal” classroom and be fully functional; to this end both the individual students and the community at large are served. The release of a student is based upon standardized testing, teacher observation, and in some cases how well they perform at a given school.

To meet the needs of students the school provides individualized attention, an adjusted curriculum, and specialized techniques of teaching for children who could not maintain progress in the standard classroom. By combining cooperative efforts of parents, faculty, and the community the students of Morning Star School are blessed with an opportunity to grow intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

Morning Star School is fully accredited and the only Catholic school in the area that provides individualized educational programs for children with learning disabilities; instructors are certified by the State of Florida in special education. The school is working constantly to achieve the abovementioned objectives by providing individualized programs for each child based on the child’s specific needs. The curriculum taught at Morning Star School is equivalent to all other schools – merely delivered in a modified fashion. In addition to a curriculum stressing sensitivity and responsibility, the school offers educational strategies such as multisensory instruction – both individualized and in small groups, skillstreaming for all ages to initiate and promote positive social interactions, cooperative learning, and an integrated curriculum are utilized to achieve these goals. The students are never labeled and therefore separated based on their individual disabilities. Careful, specific, and ongoing assessment is critical to the students’ success.
